Specific Duties :
The project aims to elucidate the evolution of plant parasitic smut fungi with respect to morphology, mode of interaction and comparative genomics. The project focuses on the Ustilaginaceae (Basidiomycota) on Poaceae and has a special focus on hybridization. An additional focus is the analysis of the evolution of effector genes potentially relevant for the parasitic interaction. The project is intended for prolongation.
3. Research Associate on “Ecology of living marine resources”
Name of Institution | Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences, Department of Biology, Institute of Marine Ecosystem and Fisheries Science |
Salary level | EGR. 13 TV-L |
Start date | 01.05.2023, the initial fixed term is three years. (This is a fixed-term contract in accordance with Section 2 of the academic fixed-term labor contract act |
Application deadline | 06.04.2023 |
Scope of work | Part-time |
Weekly hours | 50 % of standard work hours per week |
Requirements :
- A university degree in a relevant field.
- Experience in conducting experiments and ship-based field studies.
- Knowledge of handling, husbandry and reproduction of aquatic animals.
- Experience in microscopy, respirometry and enzyme analysis
- Advanced skills in statistical analysis, data visualisation and scientific (English) writing are also advantageous.
Specific Duties :
The successful candidate will be a member of an ambitious research group focused on the ecology of marine fish and invertebrates. The scientific work will include laboratory experiments, field studies and meta-analyses to investigate how commercially important species respond to external pressures, especially anthropogenic climate change and stochastic extremes such as heat waves and low-oxygen events. The research aims to integrate processes across different biological levels, from subcellular functions to population- and ecosystem dynamics. Defining ecological niches, energy budgets and reproductive capacities is a central component of this research. The Institute of Marine Ecosystem and Fisheries Science (IMF) offers access to several research vessels as well as modern technologies for animal husbandry and manipulation of environmental parameters in experimental settings. As part of innovative research projects, the candidate will also apply and optimise a variety of analytical methods such as automated video/image analysis, respirometry and enzyme kinetics. The application of physiological data to predict ecological processes at large spatial scales using habitat models will be addressed in close collaboration with other research groups at the IMF. In addition, the candidate will have the opportunity for interdisciplinary collaboration und use of extensive infrastructure at the Department of Biology, the Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability (CEN), and the DFG excellence cluster CLICCS. Academic duties at the IMF include the presentation of results at international conferences, the publication of scientific articles and a teaching commitment of 2 hours per week each semester.
